Abstract

JARAMILLO JARAMILLO, Juliana. The conservative proposal against the educational project of radical liberalism: the defense of catholic education through the press and associations. Hist. Soc. [online]. 2016, n.30, pp.291-319. ISSN 0121-8417.  https://doi.org/10.15446/hys.n30.48716.

During the second half of Colombian nineteenth century, conservatives and people who were close to the Catholic Church, opposed to the public educational project proposed by the Liberal government between 1860 and 1870, due to its secular orientation which was viewed as a threat to the stability of religion and Catholic Church in the country. Because of this, the ''procatholic'' groups launched an offensive against the government to fight its educative project and to promote at the same time their own pedagogical project. This article aims to examine two of the central mechanisms that they used with the goal mentioned, such were the press and the associations. Thus, it is intended that this review will help to better understand the transformation that took Colombian education, towards the last quarter of the nineteenth century, from a secular educational model to a confessional one.

Keywords : Colombia; nineteenth century; education; catholicism; periodicals; associations.
