Introduction.

We reviewed the biological fundaments of regenerative medicine, in particular of stem cells and the platelet growth factors. We presented the classification, sources of supply and proposed mechanisms of action for stem cells, as well as the great challenges of biotechnology for the development of regenerative medicine and the clinical evidence of its safety/efficacy relationship in medical practice.

Objective.

Review and systematize the updated information about the fundaments and potential uses of the regenerative medicine.

Methodology.

A systematic literature search was conducted in the Pubmed, Medline, Science and Cochrane databases, between 2010 and 2016, using the following key words: stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, medicine regenerative, homing, platelet-rich plasma, platelet growth factors.
