Abstract
SEQUEIRA, Teresa and DINIZ, Francisco. The Impact of Investment in Rural Areas: the Emergence of the Third Sector beyond Appearances (Portugal). Cuad. Desarro. Rural [online]. 2013, vol.10, n.71, pp.145-165. ISSN 0122-1450.
The present paper begins with an overlook at the third sector and the relationship between investment and growth. It is empirically focused on the Portuguese rural regions of Douro and Alto Trás-os-Montes, which have received a great quantity of investment incentives from the European Union. The purpose is to study the impact of these investments on development. Results show public investment has had greater impact than private production investment, which highlights the importance of non-for-profit investment on the third sector. For this reason, support for the third sector stands out as a main item in rural development policies, given that the impact of public investment did not bring about a dynamic of marketable goods on an international scale that could help regions become independent on public financial support.
