Abstract

ARTIEDA, TERESA LAURA. History of the People's University "Juan Ramón Lestani" (Chaco, Argentina, circa 1929-1960). Hist. Caribe [online]. 2021, vol.16, n.38, pp.167-208.  Epub May 18, 2022. ISSN 0122-8803.  https://doi.org/10.15648/hc.38.2021.2816.

This article discusses the history of the People's University "Juan R. Lestani", in the province of Chaco in the North-East of Argentina, between the late 1920s and the 1960s. To this end, I examine the views that influenced in the university configuration, the traces of its European origins, the education offered, and the building features. I present this article with a historical context description, in which this University is constituted, and the European origins of People's Universities. This analysis contributes to an understanding of this local institution as a manifestation of a broader historical context, which enables us to discover the common 168 features it has with similar institutions as well as those that are unique. The institution's archives, interviews to former and current administrators, as well as local newspapers constituted the corpus of primary sources used.
