Abstract

With the objective of evaluating the attraction capacity of methyl salicylate on beneficial insects (parasitoids and predators) present in the coffee crop, 20 sticky traps with methyl salicylate were installed in a 1.6 Ha plot and 20 traps without an attractor were installed in a 1.6 Ha control lot in the municipality of Taminango, Nariño, Colombia. The traps were checked weekly during four months. According to the t-Test, morphospecies captured belonging to the families Chrysopidae, Ichneumonidae, Perilampidae, Chalcididae, Braconidae, Coccinellidae, and other beneficial insect families, were greater and statistically different from those found in the control treatment. Twenty-three species were recorded in the plot with methyl salicylate traps, while ten species were captured in the control plot. According to Margalef's index, a greater diversity was recorded in the plot with salicylate in relation to the control plot; a similar result was found with Shannon-Wiener's Index (H'). The results indicate that the use of chemical attractors could be efficient for increasing natural enemy populations, which could contribute to the natural biological control of coffee pests.
