Abstract

HERNAEZ GARCIA, Milagrosa. LA NEUTRALIDAD TERAPÉUTICA DEL PSICÓLOGO. pers.bioét. [online]. 2007, vol.11, n.2, pp.126-137. ISSN 0123-3122.

In this article we approach neutrality applied to Psychological Therapy, in order to propose questions and reflections. It is about what neutrality means in Psychotherapy, and whether Psychologist can use it or not when he addresses changes in his patient. We identify and support those elements that give neutrality: recognizing the patient as someone valid, the Psychologist personal and professional conditions, and if the reason for consulting has been a good shot. We also admit that there are some elements doubtfully neutral: the question as a tool, the social valuation of therapeutic results, as well as the non-appropriate management of an asymmetric relationship. The question about neutrality is now open. Our main conclusion is that Psychologists are only agents for change, so patients can make a free and responsible decision to give a meaning to their lives.

Keywords : Neutrality; psychological therapy; meeting; a meaningful life; auto determination; agent for change; professional honesty.
