Abstract

CAMARGO SIERRA, Angélica. New inhabitants in old urban peripheries: residential mobility and urban change in the Restrepo area in Bogota. Territ. [online]. 2023, n.48, pp.1-.  Epub Oct 05, 2023. ISSN 0123-8418.  https://doi.org/10.12804/revistas.urosario.edu.co/territorios/a.12343.

The Restrepo area in Bogotá is considered an old urban periphery; although its development began in the 1930s, it is currently located between the pericenter and the current periphery, in a strategic location in relative terms concerning the city. As in other Latin American cities, these areas are territories in transformation with very important recompositions, although relatively little studied in relation to the popular peripheries and historical centers. This article analyzes the links between the residential mobility trajectories of the inhabitants, their location decisions, and urban transformations, mainly the housing stock built in the last 20 years. The method consists of interviews with the inhabitants of recently constructed buildings and some representatives of construction companies in the area. We concluded that the recent transformations of the housing stock are associated with diverse residential and social trajectories of its inhabitants but that, in general, tend to be upward and, therefore, could exert significant socio-spatial changes. The article contributes to understanding the links between residential mobility and urban changes and provides knowledge on the transformations of the old urban peripheries.

Keywords : Residential mobility; territorial transformation; urban change; urban peripheries.
