Abstract

SILVA SARAIVA, Luiz Alex  and  CORDEIRO CAMPOS, Clarissa. Differences, Translations and Methodologies in Research on Cities: Perspectives from Brazil, Spain and the Basque Country. Territ. [online]. 2023, n.48, pp.1-.  Epub Oct 05, 2023. ISSN 0123-8418.  https://doi.org/10.12804/revistas.urosario.edu.co/territorios/a.10516.

In this article the aim is to problematize research practices in the field of organizational studies on cities, especially regarding the application of qualitative and comparative methods, which imply understanding, translation and analysis of information in different languages. The data examined refers to three investigations carried out in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, in Brazil, in Madrid and in the Basque Country, in the Spanish territory. The theoretical and methodological path suggests that the asymmetries between researchers and the researched demand ethical reflections on what, for what, and why investigations are made that bring so little return to non-researchers. Regardless of whether the research is done in Europe or South America, the data point to translation as an important element of research because it implies recognizing differences between distinct agents, suggesting humanizing methodologies not only to de-instrumentalize research, but to recognize the humanity of those involved in the investigation.

Keywords : Differences; translation; cities; qualitative research; research ethics.
