Abstract
AVILA DIAZ, Álvaro Javier; CARVAJAL ESCOBAR, Yesid and GUTIERREZ SERNA, Sergio Enrique. El niño and la niña analysis influence in the monthly water supply at Cali River basin. Tecnura [online]. 2014, vol.18, n.41, pp.120-133. ISSN 0123-921X.
The frequency of hydrometeorological extreme events associated with Climate Variability and / or climate change is increasing, making human societies more vulnerable, so is becoming a critical environmental issue of the 21st century. In tropics, climate variability interacts with climate change, making especially difficult to distinguish among their respective impacts, due to the strong influence of the first in the current climate conditions. The impacts of ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) on water availability of the Cali River Basin were analyzed. Significant correlations among variables associated with ENSO (MEI, ONI, SOI, Τ NIÑO 3-4) and monthly rainfall in the basin, and flow of main tributaries rivers were obtained. We conclude that the water supply decreased about 40 % during periods of "El Niño" and increased is availability to 65 % on La Niña periods. The Results will provide advances in hydrometeorological studies, in order to reduce uncertainty of the risk of droughts and floods that usually occur during the ENSO extreme phases.
