Celebrating ten years of the Journal of Public Health

The Journal of Public Health completed 10 years of uninterrupted editorial activity in 2008. A decade of continuous human and institutional effort has led to the Journal of Public Health occupying a distinguished place in Colombia and Latin-America.
The journal has undergone significant changes from 1999 to 2008 in its editorial and scientific committees, an increase in articles published, diversification of content, languages used, presentation and open access to complete on-line text (www.scielo.org.co; www.scielosp.org).
During the same time the Journal of Public Health has increased its publication frequency from four-monthly to two-monthly; the number of articles published per volume has risen from 26 to 89 and the number of pages from 271 to 1,020. We now have authors contributing to the journal from Colombia, México, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Cuba and another five countries. 94 % of the articles are written in Spanish, 4 % in English and 2 % in Portuguese.
The foregoing data indicates that the Journal of Public Health has responded to the challenge of expressing a growing scientific community in Public Health and has contributed towards its scope and communicative quality. Such development, in turn, reflects the quantitative and qualitative increase in research, schools of public health and publishing capacity.
On the other hand, the Journal of Public Health has raised the international visibility of national science and that of the authors and institutions publishing in it, especially in Medline, SciELO and Scopus.
The Journal of Public Health is conscious of the new efforts which will be required to continue efficiently fulfilling its role in line with expected quality, trying to select and publish (whenever possible) the best of the original work received. The journal has thus brought into practice a system of electronic on-line editorial management, including sending and receiving originals, evaluating them and then processing the material.
We will continue assuming the commitment of a journal hoping to count on authors, editors and readers’ participation.
