Abstract

FLOREZ RESTREPO, JORGE ALEJANDRO. LA COMEDIA DE MENANDRO: UNA COMEDIA ÉTICA. discus.filos [online]. 2006, vol.7, n.10, pp.199-214. ISSN 0124-6127.

Menander's biographical data link him, in his youth, to Epicurus, and years later, to Theophrastus, the second director of the Lyceum. This paper traces back the possible influences of these philosophers on the comic dramatist. Several aspects of Menander's comedies show close relations with the ethical views of both Peripatetic and Epicurean philosophy and such an influence allows us to call Menander's work Ethical Comedy.

Keywords : Aristotle; Epicurus; Comedy; Ethics; Happiness; Menander; Virtue; Fate.
