Abstract

GARCIA-SCHILARDI, María Emilia. COLLECTIVE PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Their role in social inclusion process. Bitácora Urbano Territorial [online]. 2014, vol.24, n.1, pp.35-42. ISSN 0124-7913.

In modern Latin American cities, social exclusion appears as a very important phenomenon. In order to integrate excluded territories it is necessary to improve its mobility and access to urban services. In this regard massive public transport plays a key role. The aim of this paper is to explain the incidence of collective transport service in the inclusion processes, particularly in Gran Mendoza metropolitan area. To reach this goal, three critical variables will be evaluated: travel time, transport rate and transport net coverage. As a conclusion, there are made two recommendations: increase service frequencies, so waiting time at the bus stop will be reduced and adequate rates to the lower income groups. This analysis is of great importance due to the fact that it precisely characterizes the weaknesses of the service, and allows it to play its role in social inclusion processes.

Keywords : Urban mobility; social exclusion; territorial fragmentation.
