Abstract

OSSUL-VERMEHREN, Ignacia. Home-making practices in informal settlement in Viña del Mar, Chile. Bitácora Urbano Territorial [online]. 2021, vol.31, n.3, pp.201-215.  Epub Sep 23, 2021. ISSN 0124-7913.  https://doi.org/10.15446/bitacora.v31n3.86886.

Home-making practices such as cooking, building, and connecting informally to services are intrinsic to the everyday life of women in informal settlements in Viña del Mar, Chile. Women's practices and narratives around the 'home', however, are an under-researched topic that can provide valuable input to analyse gender relations in the socio-spatial production of informal housing. Through an ethnographic approach, using visual and participatory methods, the article presents empirical data produced in the two largest informal settlements in Chile. The findings show that home-making practices are not only survival strategies, but intrinsically political. The research provides a three-dimensional framework which categorises home-making practice into practices of construction, maintenance, and planning of the home. With a commitment to gender and urban justice, the analytical and methodological approach contributes to the recognition of women's efforts in the struggle for housing in Chile.

Keywords : everyday life; women; home; housing; informal settlement.
