Abstract

SALAZAR ROSERO, Mary Adriana; PRAGER MOSQUERA, Martín  and  ARARAT ROJAS, José Enrique. EVALUATION OF GREEN FERTILIZERS IN CULTIVATION OF CASSAVA Manihot Sculenta Krantz IN AN INCEPTISOL IN A HILLSIDE ZONE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CAUCA, COLOMBIA. Rev. Fac. Nac. Agron. Medellín [online]. 2004, vol.57, n.2, pp.2413-2422. ISSN 0304-2847.

The cut and distribution in the field of various green fertilizers, including corn-red beans, mucuna, sorghum, mille- red beans, and mille, in the cultivation of cassava (Manihot sculenta Krantz), was evaluated in an inceptisol in a hillside zone of the Department of Cauca (Colombia), analyzing their effects on the properties of the soil and their capability to inhibit spontaneous vegetation undesirable for the crop. With respect to the physical-chemical properties of the soil, porosity varied significantly due to the effects of the different green fertilizers evaluated, with the corn-red beans mixture excelling. In terms of chemical properties, calcium and magnesium showed significant differences with their concentrations higher when mucuna green fertilizer was applied, excelling in its capacity to recycling these nutrients. Sorghum was the green fertilizer that had least effect on spontaneous vegetation due to its slow decomposition and also was the one that obtained the highest productivity of cassava production (17 t/ha.). In general, all green fertilizers presented adequate qualities for their use as part of a sustainable management strategy in this type of soil.

Keywords : Green fertilizers; cassava; inceptisols; hillside soils; physical properties; chemical properties of soils.
