Abstract

DAVID-COLON, Jesús Daniel  and  MARIN-CASAS, Dairo Humberto. Sponges (Porifera) associated with breakwaters in the department of Sucre (Colombian Caribbean). Rev. acad. colomb. cienc. exact. fis. nat. [online]. 2020, vol.44, n.173, pp.996-1007.  Epub June 28, 2021. ISSN 0370-3908.  https://doi.org/10.18257/raccefyn.1038.

Sponges inhabit various natural and artificial hard substrates. In the latter, few studies have been conducted in Colombia. In this study, we listed and briefly described the species of sponges associated with breakwaters in the department of Sucre. The sponges were collected manually from three breakwaters in Coveñas. For their identification, spicule mounts and thick histological sections were made, and the relevant taxonomic literature was consulted. We found 22 species grouped in 15 families and eight orders eight of which are new records for the ecoregion of the Gulf of Morrosquillo and ten for the department of Sucre. The richness of species was higher than previously recorded for the Gulf of Morrosquillo. These results contribute to strengthen the knowledge of sponges in artificial substrates and their geographical distribution in the Colombian Caribbean.

Keywords : Sponges; Porifera; Breakwater; Richness; Gulf of Morrosquillo.
