Abstract

ANDRADE-AMAYA, Carlos Alberto; GUZMAN-MARTINEZ, Richard  and  QUINTANA-SAAVEDRA, Diana María. The advance of the coastline of the peninsulas of Bocagrande and Castillogrande and the construction of the Breakwater in 1758 in Cartagena de Indias. Rev. acad. colomb. cienc. exact. fis. nat. [online]. 2022, vol.46, n.180, pp.758-768.  Epub Sep 20, 2023. ISSN 0370-3908.  https://doi.org/10.18257/raccefyn.1722.

The submerged archaeological landscapes off the coast of Cartagena de Indias were reconstructed based on high-resolution multibeam bathymetric data from the Hydrographic Service of the General Maritime Directorate of Colombia and on the comparison of historical maps from 1772, 1854, 1935, 1995, and 2021. We show that the construction of the Bocagrande breakwater has meant the accretion of around 44,4 Ha of land in Bocagrande and the spurs placed on the beach in the last century have sustained it.

Keywords : Cartagena Bay; La Escollera; Bocagrande; Coastline change.
