Abstract

MONTERO FAYAD, Verónica. San Agustín Statues (Huila, Colombia) at the Ethnological Museum of Berlin: Itinerary of Classifications and Exhibitions. Rev. colomb. antropol. [online]. 2016, vol.52, n.2, pp.175-198. ISSN 0486-6525.  https://doi.org/10.22380/2539472X43.

Regarding the debate initiated in 2013 on the repatriation of the San Agustin sculptures collected by Konrad Theodor Preuss in 1913, and housed at the Ethnological Museum of Berlin, this article explores the classificatory systems and ways of exhibiting objects in this museum from the end of the 19th century until the present. The aim is to understand the German context in which the Augustinian sculptures among other artifacts, were obtained and have functioned in the Berliner institution. The article addresses the social and political circumstances, the dynamics within the museum, as well as the epistemological concepts that have underpinned the collection and display of objects.

Keywords : San Agustín; Ethnological Museum of Berlin; classifications; exhibitions.
