Abstract

BAHAMON MUNETON, Marly Johana. The Relationship between Maladaptive Schemes, Cognitive Distortions and Symptoms of Pathological Gambling among Gamblers in Casinos. Pensam. psicol. [online]. 2013, vol.11, n.2, pp.89-102. ISSN 1657-8961.

Objective. To identify the relationships between maladaptive schemas, cognitive distortions and symptoms of pathological gambling in 27 regular casino players in the city of Pereira. Method. We employed a correlational design quantitative approach, in which the South Oaks Pathological Gambling (SOGS, Lesieur and Blume, 1987) questionnaire, the Spanish validation of Echeburúa, Baez, Fernández-Montalvo and Paez, 1994), the Young Schema Questionnaire Long Form - Second Edition (Colombian population validated by Castrillon et al., 2005) and the inventory of automatic thoughts (Ruiz and Luján, 1991), were used for identifying cognitive distortions. Results. It was found that 66% of the participants met the criteria for pathological gambling, the most frequent cognitive distortions being filtering, catastrophic vision, control fallacy, fallacy of change, 'must be' fallacy, 'being right' fallacy and divine reward. Meanwhile, schemes most represented were those of mistrust / abuse, vulnerability to harm, right/grandiosity and insufficient self-control. Furthermore, significant correlations were found between symptoms of pathological gambling and abandonment schema (r = 0.40, p = 0.03), fallacy distortion control (r = 0.63, p = 0.0) should (r = 0.39, p = 0.04), and being right (r = 0.472, p = .01). Conclusion. It is possible to establish that the presence of schemas and cognitive distortions in pathological gamblers is presented similarly in regular players, differing in the level of intensity, which shows greater flexibility in participants who do not achieve high scores on symptoms of pathological gambling.
