Abstract

CEBOTAREV, E.A. (Nora). Familia, socialización y nueva paternidad. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2003, vol.1, n.2, pp.53-78. ISSN 1692-715X.

The purpose of this article is to illustrate the constructed, flexible and multiform character of family structures and inter-generational processes, using as example the historical transformation of the US family and to share research results and new conceptualizations of recent changes, in order to contribute to a better understanding of impacts of intra-family socialization processes on the shaping of future generations. The article consists of 5 parts which cover the following themes: the family and its complexity; diverse conceptualizations and historic transformation of families; changes in gender roles and identities, the new fatherhood, parenting and parenting tasks during adolescence considering cognitive development, emotionality, changes in self-concepts of adolescents and conflict management; the effects of parenting styles (from rigid control to induction and democracy), warmth, acceptance, providing information, enabling and limiting behavior, connectivity and contextual changes. The article concludes asking to what extent can this knowledge assist Latin American families to shape a more peaceful and just society.

Keywords : Family; socialization; change; gender; new fatherhood; parenting; adolescence.
