Abstract

SUAREZ RESTREPO, Nelly del Carmen  and  RESTREPO RAMIREZ, Dalia. Teoría y práctica del Desarrollo Familiar en Colombia. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2005, vol.3, n.1, pp.17-55. ISSN 1692-715X.

This paper has the intention of sharing and discussing with the international academic community a proposal for a new discipline called "Family Development", which originated in the 80's in the State of Caldas (Departamento de Caldas), Colombia. The proposal is being built in three tiers: first, as a conceptual-theoretical model to scientifically ground the relationship between family and society in the context of development; second, as a political strategy of socio-familial change, and third, as its application through academic training with a participatory action research methodology to prepare agents of family and social change at undergraduate and graduate levels. The paper is distributed in two sections: the first deals with the historical foundations of the creation and development of family science in North America, and of the new discipline of Family Development in Colombia. In the second section, a discussion of the theoretical, conceptual and methodological bases of the new discipline is carried out from a unique indigenous perspective, which focuses on family and development. Development is seen here as a process which has its manifestations in three human existence levels: individual, familial and societal.

Keywords : family science; family development; alternative epistemology; agency; familial empowerment; equity; familial democracy; micro and macro alternative development; new discipline; familial and social change.
