Abstract
GONZALEZ, Aída María and TAMAYO, Oscar Eugenio. Cognitive-emotional barriers to performing physical activity in university students. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2012, vol.10, n.1, pp.379-396. ISSN 1692-715X.
This study aimed to characterize the cognitive-emotional barriers for university students failing to perform regular physical activity, and to investigate the meaning of these obstacles for them. We carried out an explanatory mixed study of sequential stages. For the quantitative stage, we conducted a survey with 432 students from 5 universities in Manizales-Colombia. In the survey we inquired about knowledge on physical activity recommendations, its quantification, and perception of body image, benefits received, feelings, motivations and obstacles for the physical activity. For the qualitative stage we conducted three focal groups in an effort to explain the most relevant findings of the survey. The barriers found were lack of knowledge about the guidelines given by the health agencies and failures in training from early ages of life.
