CUADRA-MARTINEZ, David; GEORGUDIS-MENDOZA, Constantino Nicolás  and  ALFARO-RIVERA, Robinson Alejandro. The social representation of sport and physical education by students with obesity. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2012, vol.10, n.2, pp.983-1001. ISSN 1692-715X.

Abstract: This study seeks to determine the social representation of sport and physical education held by students with obesity. Qualitative and quantitative methodology was used with 63 students participating in primary and secondary education in a community in the Atacama region of Chile. The social representation held by students consisted of enabling and constraining factors. Facilitators included the motivation to take part in these activities and an appraisal of their ability to influence their level of health when practised. Hindering factors included inadequate definition of the latter and poor identification of challenges in school life and family dynamics that lead to physical inactivity. The discussion presents an explanatory theory of this form of social representation.

Keywords : social representation; student; obesity; physical education; sport.
