Using an ethnographical perspective this article analyzes how young people construct and experience youth in different Ayuujk and Zapotec communities, in the North Sierra of Oaxaca, Mexico. At the heart of this analysis are generational conflicts caused by the definition of subjectivities. These subjectivities are particularly associated with tensions regarding the body, identities and individual and collective life plans. Using evidence collected from ethnographic material and in-depth interviews the authors show how young people have inherited the struggles of their predecessors and generally maintain a strong commitment to their communities. The results also propose other ways to be young that destabilize subjectivities and o k strong community engagement, they are considering other ways of being young that destabilizing subjectivities and practices established in their communities.
