Abstract
BARBOSA-PEREIRA, Alexandre. The "rolezinhos" in the shopping centers of Sao Paulo: youth, fear and prejudice. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2016, vol.14, n.1, pp.545-557. ISSN 1692-715X. https://doi.org/10.11600/1692715x.14137110515.
The article discusses events involving young people in malls in Brazil’ s large cities in the summer holidays of 2013/2014. These young people are called "rolezinhos" (which is slang for ‘little walks’ among the city’ s youth). Large impromptu gatherings of young carioca funk music fans were organized through the use of social networks. These events have suffered from strong police repression and a criminalizing and stigmatizing media approach. Through field observations of the rolezinhos, ethnographic research on the carioca funk music in São Paulo and research on this group’ s use of social networks that was conducted between the year 2012 and 2014, the paper demonstrates how fear and prejudice were important in the persecution and negative portrayal of poor young people in malls.
