Abstract

TEJADA TOVAR, Candelaria; RUIZ PATERNINA, Erika; GALLO MERCADO, Jorge  and  MOSCOTE BOHORQUEZ, Jason. Evaluation of the biosorption with african palm bagasse for the removal of Pb (II) in solution. Prospect. [online]. 2015, vol.13, n.1, pp.59-67. ISSN 1692-8261.  https://doi.org/10.15665/rp.v13i1.360.

It was studied the adsorption of Pb (II) using palm bagasse chemically treated with citric acid. This material is chosen due to is an available waste in the Colombian Caribbean region. The experiments were carried out in batch system in aqueous solution of lead at a concentration of 100 ppm. The determination of the heavy concentration at the end of the process was measured by atomic absorption. The characterization of adsorbent materials used was carry out using FTIR. It was found that the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups are mainly responsible of adsorption capacities. Furthermore, it was found that the pH is the most prevalent factor in the process. The optimum value was 6. Moreover, it was found that the Pb (II) exhibits rapid sorption during the first 10 minutes. The process was better fitted by the Elovich model. The maximum adsorption capacity according to Langmuir isotherm was 162 and 451 mg/g for unmodified and modified bagasse respectively. It was established that the chemical treatment was highly efficient.
