Abstract

URREGO YEPES, William; CARDONA VASQUEZ, Natalia; VELASQUEZ RESTREPO, Sandra Milena  and  ABRIL CARRASCAL, Carolina. Review - Characterization of rubber compounds with post-industrial leather waste. Prospect. [online]. 2017, vol.15, n.2, pp.13-25. ISSN 1692-8261.  https://doi.org/10.15665/rp.v15i2.776.

Usually industrial wastes are disposed in landfills or destined for incineration, thereby losing their potential use as raw materials in the manufacture of new materials. The rubber and leather industries are considered as some of the most contaminants in the world, however, the rubber industry has demonstrated its interest in the development of compounds that involve the use of materials classified as waste. This review covers generally some characteristics of waste post-industrial leather produced during chemical tanning with chromium salts and processes roughing, as well as features and basic concepts for analysis of rubber compounds added with leather residues. The size of the leather particles and their acidic characteristics play an important role in the vulcanization processes and in the physicochemical properties of the rubber compounds mixed with this postindustrial residue. The addition of waste post-industrial leather generates in the rubber a reinforcing effect that can be used for applications in products of greater hardness than non reinforced rubbers, however these residues generate a decrease in the elongation capacity of the material.
