Abstract This paper shows the results of an ethnographic research related to Periquillo Carnival, a cultural phenomenon that is celebrated each 20th of January in Pueblo Viejo, Magdalena. This celebration moves around the production and exhibition of a kind of anthropomorphic figures called periquillos. The practices that are done inside this carnival condense the artistic and the ritual produ-cing, in this way, the circulation of symbolical elements that speaks about the lives and experiences of this society, and as well about their memory and the ways that community thinks about itself. In consequence, this paper has as main target to problematize art and ritual as potential elements that allow to interpret the social life; for this reason this research pretends to criticize some paradigms that wants to see only folkloric manifestations in this kind of phe-nomena, isolate them from the social and political focus from they come.
