Abstract

ROJAS-SEPULVEDA, CLAUDIA M.; RODRIGUEZ-CUENCA, JOSÉ VICENTE  and  SANCHEZ-URRIAGO, ANCÍZAR. Life conditions of some inhabitants of Bogotá (Colombia) at the end of the 19th century and in the early 20th century: first contributions from bioarchaological analysis. memorias [online]. 2020, n.42, pp.75-110.  Epub Oct 28, 2021. We aimed to study general life conditions of people who died in Bogotá between 1850 and 1950 and who were buried in the so-called "cemetery for the poor." Our team cleaned and studied 81% of the osteological and cultural material excavated in part of Globo B of the Cementerio Central. Some general results obtained after studying the osteological material are presented here. The presence of bone anomalies, such as porotic hyperostosis; cribra orbitalia; osteolysis; periostosis; fracture; osteophytes; eburnation; Schmörl nodes; spondylolysis; and entheseal changes were recorded and analyzed. The most frequent anomalies reported were periostosis, osteophytes and entheseal changes. The frequencies were lower than those reported in other historical collections on the continent, and some are similar to those reported in collections with individuals considered as elite. This study invites further research on this interesting collection.
