The present work constitutes an initial approach to the expression of street art in San Basilio de Palenque. For this, a qualitative, descriptive approach is approached in order to analyze the uses of visual language in Palenquero art from visual ethnography and the tools of visual text. For this, pieces of various styles of graffiti are analyzed in relation to the expression of visual language tools in the documented social and cultural practices of the Palenquera community. Among the results found, artistic expressions of resistance and conservation of culture are highlighted as organizational strategies to make visible the difficulties, challenges and traditions of the first free people of Latin America.
