Abstract
ESCANDON BARBOSA, Diana Marcela and HURTADO AYALA, Andrea. Characteristics of the managers of the Born Global companies in Colombia. Entramado [online]. 2012, vol.8, n.2, pp.74-93. ISSN 1900-3803.
The purpose of this article is to analyze the characteristics of the managers of the Born Global companies in Colombia who influence the process of internationalization. According to a literature review, the skills and abilities that predominate in the managers in order to gain access to international markets are, among others, the entrepreneur's previous experience, academic training, and attitude towards risk. With the objective of differentiating the managerial profiles of the Born Global companies that are determinant in the process of internationalization and in export success, a two-step analysis of conglomerates has been proposed based on the aforementioned variables. This method provides evidence of the existence of three types of managerial profiles: born manager, manager with knowledge, and manager with experience. These profiles correspond to the Born Global companies which are successful, companies which are growing, and companies with limited success, respectively. It is found that this study provides a characterization of an entrepreneur who promotes early globalization, a practice which enables the generation of globalization policies on the part of the national government and the exploitation of these traits on the part of entrepreneurs and professionals.
