Abstract

GALINDO-ESPANOL, Andrés Mauricio. Factors Associated with the Occurrence of Protests in Colombia, 2000-2018. CS [online]. 2023, n.39, pp.84-110.  Epub Sep 01, 2023. ISSN 2011-0324.  https://doi.org/10.18046/recs.i39.5267.

This article seeks to make a comprehensive framework analysis to better understand social protest and its complexities. In this sense, in order to determine the factors associated with social protest in Colombia from 2000 to 2018, a descriptive study was conducted at the municipal level by implementing count models and according to potential explanations based on the grievance theory, resource mobilization, and political opportunity structure. The main result is the difference between the factors associated with the occurrence and those associated with the frequency of protests. To control the effect of population size, an additional model was implemented by separating municipalities with less and more than 1 000 000 inhabitants, which reduced the dispersion found in social protest.

Keywords : Social Protest; Count Models; Associated Factors; Multilevel Models.
