Language is comparable to the backbone in the culture of a people. With it beliefs, folklore, knowledge and traditions are transmitted, elements that build its identity. This article is derived from research conducted in a community of indigenous students and its purpose was to “Identify the form of protection of the native language that is preserved in students of the Zenú ethnic group at ‘El Reparo’ Educational Institution located in Coveñas (Sucre)” and its construction of identity”. The ethnographic method was implemented in this study, applied to the description of social discourse, focusing the object of study from educational ethnography correlated with the empirical-analytical paradigm, finding as a result that there are still some expressive forms typical of the Guajiba language, and concluding that there are few ethno-educational actions as well as low interest of some members of the community and institutions to preserve the native language, prevailing unconscious words of said language.
