Abstract
RUBIANO VINUEZA, Jaime and VELASQUEZ GALVIS, Mauricio. Atrophy, metaplasia, and gastric cancer: where is the evidence?. rev. colomb. cir. [online]. 2007, vol.22, n.1, pp.39-46. ISSN 2011-7582.
The surgeon caring for a patient with gastric symptoms must possess a profound knowledge of the different aspects of the upper GI endoscopy reports, among them gastric mucosal atrophy and intestinal metaplasia. This becomes even more important when considering that Colombia is region of high prevalence of gastric cancer. A literature review was carried out on atrophy, metaplasia, and gastric cancer, searching for the best evidence available supporting the occurrence of this sequence of events, evaluating the role of Helicobacter pylory, and in an attempt to determine how the follow-up should be done so as to achieve an early diagnosis and to provide practical management recommendations.
Keywords : gastric cancer; atrophy; metaplasia; evidence-based medicine.
