Abstract

Introduction: Biliary gallstone disease is one of the most common pathological entities in the daily practice and in emergency surgery; both at global and national levels adequate study and timely and rational treatment are essential to achieve optimal patient outcomes, thus generating a positive impact in the health system. Objective: To describe the experience at Clínica del Occidente in Bogotá, Colombia, in the treatment of gallstone disease, diagnostic methods, management of complications and comorbidities. Methods: A retrospective descriptive study of all patients admitted to the institution with gallstone disease, from January 1st, 2005 to December 31st, 2011. Results: 7,279 patients were registered with gallstone and biliary tract disease with definitive surgical treatment; 96.4 % had laparoscopic intervention and 2.73 % open surgery; surgical conversion was 0.88 %. Female population accounted for 67 % of all the procedures. Of the total number of operated patients, 21.93 % had some type of comorbidity. The overall mortality rate was less than 1 %. Pregnant women were 10% (n=726) of all patients with surgical treatment, of which 98 % were in the second trimester. Conclusion: We show that presentation and management of gallstone disease at Clínica del Occidente is within accepted national and international standards for this type of pathology.
