Abstract
TOBON-RESTREPO, Alejandro; MARIN-RAMIREZ, María Cristina and LOPEZ-GIL, Gustavo Adolfo. Parrandera Music: Cultural Interconnections in the Andes of Antioquia. The case of the Caribbean Faction. This article analyzes the convergence of musical practices and trends (styles) in the emergence stage of the so-called parrandera music in Antioquia; in particular, the implicit micro and macro relations of Andean and Caribbean music, from their structural sound characteristics. In this sense, the discussion addresses the musical impact of the Latin American and Colombian Caribbean on the music of the interior of the country, within the media context produced by the emergence and consolidation of radio and the recording industry in these areas. This work contributes to the clarification of the assumptions, hypotheses and dynamics surrounding the origins of this genre and contributes to the recognition of the sound and aesthetic resources that characterize it. In other words, it answers, in ethnomusicological terms, two recurrent questions that, in the opinion of the authors, have been little developed in existing studies: what are the structural sound characteristics of parrandera music and what are its antecedents? This analysis is the result of the research project entitled “Música parrandera, caracterización, impacto y dimensión actual de esta práctica coreo-musical en Antioquia”.
Keywords : Antioquia popular music; parrandera music; Andean and Caribbean interconnections; musical cultural change.
