Abstract

SANCHEZ MORA, ALEXANDER. Las luces del cielo de la Iglesia (1747) by Antonio de Paz y Salgado: The Rhetoric of Power in the Proclamation of the Archbishopric of Guatemala. Front. hist. [online]. 2018, vol.23, n.1, pp.12-38. ISSN 2027-4688.  https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.307.

The Baroque festival Las luces del cielo de la Iglesia (1747) shows the pragmatic complexity of this discursive genre, so popular during the Viceregal Period. In the story of the archbishop's elevation of the Guatemalan seat, many interests merge: some are general, such as the loyalty to the monarchy and the exaltation of the ecclesiastical power, and some others were particular, like the promotion of the authorial figure and the defense of the new archbishop.

Keywords : Baroque festivals; Archbishop's proclamation; kingdom of Guatemala; Pedro Pardo de Figueroa.
