This article describes the foundations and challenges for modern society by discussing key dimensions that were at the basis of its deployment and crisis. Constructs that originally seemed so firm, are now at a crossroad in response to the emergence of new processes, making questionable the achievements since the eighteenth century, turning individual and collective actions uncertain and confusing. The acceleration of change, the complexity of a distinct society and the crisis of reason as the foundation of modern structures of living have generated a crisis in most people and institutions. In this context hopelessness is perceived, but also opportunities for education that may consider alternatives for discussion to expand the possibilities of human transformation. We propose seven criteria for contextually reposition the social environment of the school and discuss the enlightenment ideals in the new sociocultural scenario.
