Abstract
ARENAS, Luis-Carlos. Displacements and Settlements of the Indigenous People of Uraba in the Sinu Region (1680-1721). Historelo.rev.hist.reg.local [online]. 2023, vol.15, n.32, pp.16-58. Epub Dec 15, 2022. ISSN 2145-132X. https://doi.org/10.15446/historelo.v15n32.100907.
Until now, the explanation of the settlement of some subregions of the Colombian Caribbean between the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century, particularly in the Sinú area, has been elusive for the national historiography. This article seeks to reconstruct what happened to the indigenous people of Urabá during that period, and how the settlement of the lower and middle areas of the Sinú River transpired. This analysis is based on information obtained from the Archivo General de Indias that has not been published until now, supplemented with information from the Archivo General de la Nación de Colombia. The article details the way in which the indigenous people of the Urabá region moved towards the Sinú River between 1680 and 1721, fleeing mainly from the attacks of the "Chocoes" indigenous people, and drawn by the promises made by the free settlers with limited resources from the Sinú region, as Fals Borda correctly referred to them. As a result, during the first quarter of the 18th century, the so-called Sinú district had an unusual increase in its indigenous population, unlike all the other subregions of the province of Cartagena, which continued with an uncontrollable drop.
