Abstract
ACUNA-RODRIGUEZ, Olga and CERVANTES-P¡NTO, Felipe. Núñez, Caro and the National Bank in the Regeneration's Project of National Unit, Colombia (1886-1903). Historelo.rev.hist.reg.local [online]. 2023, vol.15, n.33, pp.15-51. Epub May 01, 2023. ISSN 2145-132X. https://doi.org/10.15446/historelo.v15n33.101779.
This article presents some reflections on the thinking of the economic policy, specifically monetary policy, developed in Colombia between 1880 and 1894, taking as a basis the National Bank, as an institution created for the issuing of banknotes, with which it was intended to foster economic growth in the country. It refers to how the appropriation and spread of ideas occurred which, by means of monetary policy, guided the construction of the project of national unity, initiated in Colombia in the period known as the Regeneration (1886-1903). The principal source for the study was the correspondence between Rafael Núñez and Miguel Antonio Caro, who were the main exponents of this political current. Some speeches given on monetary policy at key moments are analysed, as well as private and public dialogues around monetary policy. These dialogues allow us to infer that the National Bank was instrumentalized to apply centralised monetary policies, detracting from the importance of free banking and the issuance of coins, at the same time as contributing to strengthening national unity, the theoretic inspiration for which came from Europe, considered the policy of unity and of official enforcement. This policy contributed to the consolidation of the project of national unity initiated during the period of the Regeneration (1886-1903).
