Abstract
HARMAN CANALLE, Úrsula and SAGASTI, Francisco. “Development has to be redefined as the ability to solve problems”. Trilogía. Cienc. Tecnol. Soc. [online]. 2022, vol.14, n.28, e210. Epub Feb 21, 2023. ISSN 2145-7778. https://doi.org/10.22430/21457778.2612.
In this interview, Francisco Sagasti recounts the great challenges, lessons learned and achievements he has experienced in his long career, from his beginnings as a forerunner of Latin American thought in science, technology, and society (PLACTS), to his recent position as former president of Peru. Considering his country’s deep inequalities, Sagasti reflects on the linear model of innovation, the importance of investing in human resources to promote science, technology, and innovation (STI) and the need to articulate the social sciences with other sciences to rethink development. Finally, from his standpoint as former president, Sagasti discusses how he managed to put STI at the service of society during the pandemic, highlighting the great challenges to overcome and the incredible opportunities arising from the great cultural and biological diversity to promote a more inclusive development in Peru.
