Abstract

PAS, Hernán. PERIODICAL PRESS AND POPULAR CULTURE IN THE RÍO DE LA PLATA DURING 19 TH CENTURY. perifrasis. rev.lit.teor.crit. [online]. 2018, vol.9, n.18, pp.11-29. ISSN 2145-8987.  https://doi.org/10.25025/perifrasis20189.18.01.

The present work offers a characterization of modalities of reading in the nineteenth century, linked to the dynamics and the materiality of the periodical press form. It reconsiders the relations between lettered culture and popular culture based on the description of particular textual instances (from El Telégrafo Mercantil to the popular gazettes of Luis Pérez) as well as the scrutiny of the prices and costs of the printed press in Buenos Aires.

Keywords : periodical press; reading; popular culture; public reader; 19th century.
