Socio-environmental conflicts are a fundamental issue in understanding disputes between communities, state institutions and the private sector. Unfortunately, in a context such as that of Colombia, they are also the basis for the escalation of violence. Based on documentary research and the analysis of aggregate data, this paper seeks to characterize the sources of conflict and the escalation into violent scenarios of socio-environmental conflicts in the department of Santander subsequent to the signing of the peace agreements in Colombia (20162022).
Among the main findings it is evident that, among the various sources of conflict, the main escalation is concentrated in the disputes related to mining and energy activities, especially in relation to oil extraction tests using the fracking technique, a conflict located in the subregion of Magdalena Medio, province of Yariguíes, a particularly vulnerable territory given the continuity of violent events.
