During the 18th century, Peru was affected by a series of natural disasters and epidemics that diminished both the population and agricultural production. The article analyzes three cases: the recurring period of extreme cold during the winter months from 1714 to 1720, which contributed to a great epidemic that devastated the southern Andes region; the 1746 earthquake in Lima, which was a historical landmark due to the magnitude of the destruction it caused; and the phenomenon of 'El Niño' (El Niño Southern Oscillation, or ENSO) from 1791 to 1794, which caused considerable damages, especially along the northern coast of the country.
