Resumen
VARGAS CUERVO, Germán. Paleogeography of Canal and Delta of Dique, Colombia. Cuad. Geogr. Rev. Colomb. Geogr. [online]. 2021, vol.30, n.1, pp.239-256. Epub 03-Mar-2021. ISSN 0121-215X. https://doi.org/10.15446/rcdg.v30n1.82585.
The delta of Dique, flood plain and channel, located in the Colombian Caribbean coast displays natural and anthropic changes in its geologic and geomorphologic history during the last 500 years. The changes are evident in the channel geometry, the delta morphology, the high sedimentation in the Barbacoas and Cartagena bay that configured a delta in a previous bay, causing environmental problems. In this article, we present a paleogeographical and sedimological reconstruction of the Dique's channel and delta, using elemental chemistry that demonstrate the previous presence of sea water in the continental zone. Conclusions are additionally supported by other methodologies such as historic documents and maps, consultation, processing and interpretation of satellite images, the exploration of the subsoil, a detailed geologic and geomorphic survey, sediment and rock sampling, and elemental chemical composition measured by a portable XRF equipment.
Highlights: research article on paleogeography and sedimentology of the Dique channel and delta based on chemical elements that show the presence of the sea in the continental zone.
