BARRERA, Víctor y HOYOS, Carlos. VIOLENT AND DISORDERLY? ANALYSIS OF THE REPERTOIRES OF SOCIAL PROTEST IN COLOMBIA. anal.polit. [online]. 2020, vol.33, n.98, pp.167-190. ISSN 0121-4705. https://doi.org/10.15446/anpol.v33n98.89416.
The recent cycle of protests in Colombia has put at the center of the debate the need to push institutional adjustments and major guarantees for an essential right that more and more citizens are exercising. However, the authorities’ response has run counter to this demand. Under the assumption that all protests are violent and disorderly, several decision makers have formulated initiatives that further harden the use of force. In this article, we evaluate the validity of this assumption. Using a multinomial regression model that takes a sample of 22,167 protest events recorded between 1975 and 2016, we analyze the variables that influence the use of some repertoires over others. The results that show violence is a marginal tactic and the probability that it will be used is associated with a few variables in which the presence of illegal armed groups does not seem to have greater relevance.
