This paper analyses the present theoretical debate on the advantages and disadvantages, costs and benefits referred to the adoption of different foreign exchange regimes, and sp¿cially the ul tra-fix ones such as the dollarization in the present si tuation of international financial crisis and saec roeconomi:c instability in Latin America. Further on different theoretical propositions are contrasted with empir.ícal evidence of the economic performance of those countries that operate under foreign trade regimes close to dollarization, and finally, is otfers some conclusions.
