This article reflects on the characteristics and challenges present in the field of contemporary community social psychology. From an analysis of the historical context of the rise and development of the discipline in Brazil and using research on social humiliation as reference, we discuss three senses of the concept of community that can orient present research and intervention experiences: as a co-existence ethical horizon, as a collective space for coping with social humiliation, and as a utopic orientation of social criticism and transformation. We conclude that these three senses of community help form the basis for the actions of community psychologists, together with social movements, in the practices of popular education and in public health, culture and social welfare policies.
