Resumen

REIS, Catiele  y  FARO, André. Coping Strategies of Adults Stroke Victims and its Relations with Psychological Adjustment. Psicogente [online]. 2020, vol.23, n.43, pp.167-184.  Epub 29-Dic-2019. ISSN 0124-0137.  https://doi.org/10.17081/psico.23.43.3379.

Objective:

This study aimed to identify the main coping strategies used by people with stroke and to analyze how they act in the adjustment process after stroke through the Descending Hierarchical Classification (CHD) and the contrast analysis.

Results:

The results generated a dendogram with three categories that represented the focus of coping strategies (Problem Focus, Emotion and Social Support) and eight Classes that showed the main coping strategies used by stroke victims, namely: class 1 Search Rehabilitation (40 % of word segments); Class 2 Overcoming of sequelae (29.7 %); Class 3 Financial reorganization (31.3 %); Class 4 Faith to face guilt (37.0 % of class segments); Class 5 Emotional regulation (63.0 %); Class 6 Recognition of the importance of Community support (47.4 % of the segments); Class 7 Resignation of working life (27.0 %) and Class 8 Search for family support (24.7 %). Contrast analysis showed that people with less limitation tend to seek more problem-oriented strategies than emotion-oriented ones.

Conclusions:

It was concluded that there was no type of strategy that stood out from the others and that all of them had a positive denotation in the adjustment after stroke even in the long term. It is suggested that more studies on coping can be performed, especially those with a longitudinal methodology, to overcome the limitations of this study.

Palabras clave : stroke; coping strategies; psychological adaptation.
