This article describes the evolution and main characteristics of the immigrant population in Colombia before and after the various decrees and laws that have constituted the socio-legal bases of the contemporary migratory system in Colombia. Particular attention is paid to the drastic changes that took place in the volume and composition of the immigrant population under the new legal framework on migration initiated in recent years. The relationship between recent changes in the Colombian economy and immigration is also discussed. The article concludes with an assessment of the main forms of economic insertion of immigrants in the Colombian labor market and their impact on society. The information provided in this article is mainly comprised of life stories and semi-structured interviews obtained after extensive days of participant observation in the city of Barranquilla, added to a questionnaire applied in two other cities.
