Research has underlined the importance of trust between citizens and authorities to achieve the recognition of laws and maintain democratic order. The aim of this article was to investigate the elements that contribute to building trust of police. A survey was conducted with a sample of 743 adolescents in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The data was analysed through multilevel ordinal regression analysis. The results of the analysis indicate that adolescents from public schools and those who have experiences with the police have lower levels of trust. On the contrary, when adolescents have received fair and respectful treatment from the police, they demonstrate higher levels of trust. Adopting a consensual approach when working with adolescents might be a way for them to build a trustbased relationship with the police.
